Mental Health Technician (Progressive PHP)

Program: Progressive PHP of Seaside Health System

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Reports To: Mental Health Technician Supervisor

Supervisory Responsibility: None

 

Position Summary

The Mental Health Technician (MHT) performs routine and assigned tasks and assists the nursing department in carrying out patient care activities within the scope of training. The MHT maintains a safe and therapeutic environment to support patient treatment and provides patient transportation as directed.

 

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • CPR and CPI certification required and maintained

  • Mental health field experience preferred

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to work under close supervision with demanding patients and distractions

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

  • Effective communication skills across departments

  • Knowledge of basic first aid

  • Knowledge of infection control and sanitation procedures

  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and complete work accurately and on time

 

Interpersonal and Professional Skills

  • Demonstrates empathy, respect, and professionalism

  • Maintains patient dignity, confidentiality, and personal integrity

  • Displays self-direction and problem-solving skills

  • Handles stress constructively

  • Works cooperatively with staff, patients, and external partners

  • Adheres to attendance, appearance, safety, and conduct policies

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist patients with direct care to maintain personal dignity and safety

  • Take and document vital signs as directed

  • Assist nursing staff with patient care tasks

  • Assist with patient admissions and orientation to facility procedures

  • Conduct rounds to ensure patient safety and report facility or safety concerns

  • Help enforce facility rules and expectations

  • Participate in treatment team communication and implementation of treatment plans

  • Assist in maintaining a therapeutic environment and report significant patient behaviors

  • Encourage patient participation in program activities

  • Assist with patient de-escalation and therapeutic interventions

  • Transport and escort patients for admissions, discharges, and appointments

  • Follow policies related to patient safety, confidentiality, rights, and vehicle safety

  • Complete required transportation documentation

  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Travel Requirements

  • Provides patient transportation as directed
